One of the most surprising things when you look at small businesses is how many of them don't have a website. You would think that in this day and age everybody would know how important a website is for all businesses. Clearly that is not the case. Any business that does not have a website is missing out on one of the most powerful marketing tools available to them.

The main reason that it is important for businesses to have a website is how people are likely to find you. These days most people will go on-line and research products and companies before they make a purchase, if you don't have a website you are missing out on all of this potential business. Even if people don't buy your product on-line they are still likely to research it on-line so you have to have a website so these people can learn about your business.

A website is also important because it helps you establish credibility as a business. Most people just assume that you have a website since the vast majority of businesses do, at least the vast majority of big companies do. There are actually still quite a few small businesses that don't have a website and without one this is exactly what they will remain. If you don't have a website that you can refer people to potential customers are going to assume that you are a small time company that does not take their business seriously. Once you establish this reputation it is going to be hard to make sales.

A website will not only give you credibility but it will also help to give the impression that your company is bigger and more successful than it may actually be. One of the great things about the INTERNET is that the size of your company does not really matter. There is no reason that you can't get your site to rank in Google ahead of a large multinational competitor and funnel off some of their traffic. This is a big part of the reason that a website is even more important for a small business than a big one, it tends to level the playing field.

Clearly there are still a lot of small businesses that do not have websites, there are various reasons for this but mostly it comes down to the belief that they are expensive. It is rather surprising how much small business owners believe a website will cost them. In truth a website can be built for very little money and if you are on a tight budget you can even get free websites. Remember you don't need a giant ten thousand page website for your business, just a simple site that tells people about your company and your products will be more than enough.

The Importance of Class Discussions

Class discussions offer students opportunities to test their ideas and opinions against the ideas and opinions of their peers. It is important to set the right tone for discussion in the classroom early on in the semester, and to establish a rapport with your students.

 Studies have shown that students who contribute to class conversations early on in the semester are much more likely to continue contributing to class discussions throughout the semester than those students who remain quiet during the initial few weeks of the term. Therefore, it is imperative to find ways to involve all students in the formative discussions of the course.

What Makes for a Good Discussion?

Good discussion is like art. It may be hard to define it, but you know it when you see it. Think back to a good discussion you once had, either as a student or an instructor. What made is enjoyable? What made it educational? What made it lively?

Often cited characteristics of a good discussion:
  • Accessibility: Students feel comfortable engaging in the discussion.
  • Non-combative: There is a cordial and pleasant tone to the conversation and no hostility.
  • Diversity: A variety of opinions and points of view get articulated.
  • Cohesion and focus: Discussions should be about "something," with a pedagogical goal.
  • Trust: Environment should allow students to take intellectual risks.
Types of Discussion
Mainly there are two types of discussion:
  1. Spontaneous discussion
  2. Planned discussion
Planned Discussion:
Such discussion may be initiated by the teacher by asking one student to present reports and others to discuss them in detail. This technique needs a careful planning by the teacher by including pertinent facts to the class and uniting them in the form of conclusions. An extensive list of questions is made by the teacher and these should be injected into the discussion at appropriate time. The teacher should at times emphasize a point and should see that all relevant points are covered during discussion.

Spontaneous Discussion:
It generally starts from students question about some current event that may be related to the topic under study. Such a discussion is quite helpful to students as it helps them to understand current events to analyze and relate facts to real life situations In such a discussion the knowledge of facts is reviewed and an understanding is developed.

A presentation is a means of communication that can be adapted to various speaking situations, such as talking to a group, addressing a meeting or briefing a team.
A presentation can also be used as a broad term that encompasses other ‘speaking engagements’ such as making a speech at a wedding, or getting a point across in a video conference.
To be effective, step-by-step preparation and the method and means of presenting the information should be carefully considered. 
A presentation requires you to get a message across to the listeners and will often contain a 'persuasive' element. It may, for example, be a talk about the positive work of your organisation, what you could offer an employer, or why you should receive additional funding for a project.

Consider the following key components of a presentation:


Ask yourself the following questions to develop a full understanding of the context of the presentation.


  • When and where will you deliver your presentation?
    There is a world of difference between a small room with natural light and an informal setting, and a huge lecture room, lit with stage lights. The two require quite different presentations, and different techniques.


  • Will it be in a setting you are familiar with, or somewhere new?
    If somewhere new, it would be worth trying to visit it in advance, or at least arriving early, to familiarize yourself with the room.


  • Will the presentation be within a formal or less formal setting?
    A work setting will, more or less by definition, be more formal, but there are also various degrees of formality within that.


  • Will the presentation be to a small group or a large crowd?
  • Are you already familiar with the audience?
    With a new audience, you will have to build rapport quickly and effectively, to get them on your side.


  • What equipment and technology will be available to you, and what will you be expected to use?
    In particular, you will need to ask about microphones and whether you will be expected to stand in one place, or move around.


  • What is the audience expecting to learn from you and your presentation?
    Check how you will be ‘billed’ to give you clues as to what information needs to be included in your presentation.

Writing a precis means making an intelligent summary of a long passage. To write a precis one should have a clear understanding of the passage: only then well one be able to include all the essential points  and tips and tricks of essay examples in the precis.

Techniques of Precis – Writing

There three kinds of work to be done in producing a clear and successful precis. They are:-
(1) Reading, 
(2) Writing and 
(3) Revision.


Reading

Read the passage carefully, If one reading is not enough to give you a general idea of its meaning, then read it a second time. As you read, find out the subject or the theme of the passage and what is said about the subject.

It will be a good thing if you find out the lead or the topic sentence. The lead sentence will help you to see the subject clearly. It will also help you to think of a title for the precis example.

Further reading may be necessary at this stage to make sure that the details of the passage are also understood. Read the passage more slowly this time, even sentence by sentence, and make sure that everything in the passage is understood. If this is not done, it is likely that you will miss something important, especially if it is expressed by a short phrase or a single word.

Now comes the process of selection. The writer of the precis writing passages has to decide what facts or ideas in the passage are essential and what are of secondary or no importance. Taking the main ideas of the passages as your point of reference, it should not be too difficult to write out the important points in the original in a corner of your writing work sheet.


Writing

You should first prepare a draft of the precis, keeping in mind, the need to reduce he original to one-third its length. The main thoughts expressed in the passage, the ideas it contains, the opinions presented and the conclusion arrived at should figure in the rough draft. Unimportant things like the names of people and places and dates should not figure in it. It may so happen that your first draft is too long or that it sounds rather jerky. Shorten it if necessary and write out a careful second draft during college preparation. Sometimes you may need to work out three or even four drafts, but with reasonable care and concentration, you should normally succeed in producing a good precis writing by the second draft.

COMPREHENSION IS EVEN MORE IMPORTANT TODAY

Comprehension is an essential part of successfully developing 21st century literacies.  It is a vital tool for reading in our modern age, a vehicle through which we:
  •  gain meaning from the words someone else has constructed,
  •  learn something new, to confirm something we think,
  •  understand another’s viewpoint,
  •  to relax and, yes,
  •  even to escape from the everyday pressures of life.

There are many purposes to reading but each ties back to cognition, to thinking.  Without “thinking, wondering, and pondering,” as I call it, reading becomes simply word calling.  That type of “reading” has little or no benefit to the reader or those that might listen to him.  

Reading words aloud, pronouncing them properly does not constitute this essence of reading.  Neither does reading at a certain pace or speed although all of these skills contribute.   A student can do all those things well and still not understand what the words mean.  What value is there in that?  Whether you teach reading in the classroom or work with your own children at home, be careful that you always define reading, not by the sub-skills involved, but by the understanding gained.

Paragraphs are the building blocks of papers. Many students define paragraphs in terms of length: a paragraph is a group of at least five sentences, a paragraph is half a page long, etc. In reality, though, the unity and coherence of ideas among sentences is what constitutes a paragraph.

 Length and appearance do not determine whether a section in a paper is a paragraph. For instance, in some styles of writing, particularly journalistic styles, a paragraph can be just one sentence long. Ultimately, a paragraph is a sentence or group of sentences that support one main idea. In this handout, we will refer to this as the “controlling idea,” because it controls what happens in the rest of the paragraph.

Four Essential Elements

Paragraph writing is the foundation of all essay writing, whether the form is expository, persuasive, narrative, or creative. In order to write a good paragraph, students need to understand the four essential elements of paragraph writing and how each element contributes to the whole. And nothing in the writing process is more fundamental than writing a solid paragraph.

The four elements essential to good paragraph writing are: 

  • unity, 
  • order, 
  • coherence, and
  • completeness. 
The following example illustrates the importance of these elements in paragraph writing.
  1. Unity. Unity in a paragraph begins with the topic sentence. Every paragraph has one single, controlling idea that is expressed in its topic sentence, which is typically the first sentence of the paragraph. A paragraph is unified around this main idea, with the supporting sentences providing detail and discussion. In order to write a good topic sentence, think about your theme and all the points you want to make. Decide which point drives the rest, and then write it as your topic sentence.
  2. Order. Order refers to the way you organize your supporting sentences. Whether you choose chronological order, order of importance, or another logical presentation of detail, a solid paragraph always has a definite organization. In a well-ordered paragraph, the reader follows along easily, aided by the pattern you've established. Order helps the reader grasp your meaning and avoid confusion.
  3. Coherence. Coherence is the quality that makes your writing understandable. Sentences within a paragraph need to connect to each other and work together as a whole. One of the best ways to achieve coherency is to use transition words. These words create bridges from one sentence to the next. You can use transition words that show order (first, second, third); spatial relationships (above, below) or logic (furthermore, in addition, in fact). Also, in writing a paragraph, using a consistent verb tense and point of view are important ingredients for coherency.
  4. Completeness. Completeness means a paragraph is well-developed. If all sentences clearly and sufficiently support the main idea, then your paragraph is complete. If there are not enough sentences or enough information to prove your thesis, then the paragraph is incomplete. Usually three supporting sentences, in addition to a topic sentence and concluding sentence, are needed for a paragraph to be complete. The concluding sentence or last sentence of the paragraph should summarize your main idea by reinforcing your topic sentence.
